After completing a Basketball court at the school in January 2011 and providing all the sports equipment for the sports programme, it became evident that the work could not stop there.

The school was in disrepair and the grounds were bare. There were no teaching aids and the children had no access to books in their untidy, outdated “library”.

Sanitation was poor as there was only intermittent running water for toilets and washing hands.

Following consultation with our co-ordinator and the School Committee, we set about putting a priority list together to address each problem.
SD 4 Pelaga now has a fully functioning Water Tank providing water for toilets, washing and cleaning.

The garden beds are full of flowers, and a Saraswati statue in a feature pond greets all at the front gate. The library has been transformed into an area for reading and teaching, and brand new projection equipment was provided for teachers, along with 6 revamped computers.

The school also now how a sister school in Geraldton, Waggrakine PS, who will provide ongoing educational sponsorship.

SD 4 Pelaga is also the annual host of an Interschool Basketball tournament, involving all schools in the Pelaga District, on the Indonesian Independence Day holiday on August 17.

It has been an amazing experience to be part of the transformation of the school for this very grateful community.
